Abstract
The success of the legendary Ford Model T is an impressive example of the strength of classical Taylorism and its ability of controlling complex manufacturing processes by breaking their complexity into a series of repetitive tasks. On the other hand, after decades of thus inspired reductionism, the weaknesses are equally blatantly apparent: the global optimum can simply not be reached by local departmental optimization; particularly not in our times of mergers and globalization. This paper emphasizes the necessity of a more global “holistic manufacturing” approach, while simultaneously noting the associated re-arising complexity issue. The paper illustrates these points with historical as well as contemporary industrial examples, models a particular industrial case study and presents open questions for further research.
