Abstract
Empirical formulae have been suggested for estimating the spark breakdown voltages of uniform field gaps in compressed air. They have never been confirmed by theory.
In this correspondence, a method is described for computing the spark breakdown voltages in compressed air. The method is based upon the formulation of the physical processes that govern the breakdown mechanism. The computed results are in more reasonable agreement with experiment than those predicted empirically.
