Abstract
A new method was developed for the measurement of the quantum efficiency of luminescent powders, which aimed at the calorimetric determination of the increase in temperature due to irradiation. The temperature increase is related to the same effect in non-luminescent carbon black making thereby possible the calculation of the quantum efficiency.
This method was adopted for the determination of the quantum efficiency for five different substances, with an overall accuracy of appr. 3%.
For willemites containing greater amounts of manganese or iron, it was established in the course of the investigation, that infrared luminescence is not emitted, the energy absorbed within the substance being converted entirely to thermal energy.
