Neuropsychologische restverschijnselen na bacteriële meningitis

Elk jaar krijgen ongeveer 400 mensen in Nederland bacteriële hersenvliesontsteking, een infectie veroorzaakt door bacteriën die zich in de hersenvliezen nestelen. De huidige behandeling van patiënten bij wie meningitis wordt geconstateerd ’ onmiddellijke toediening van antibiotica ’ zorgt ervoor dat veel meer patiënten dan vroeger overleven en dat de restverschijnselen beperkter blijven. Toch houdt een substantieel aantal van deze mensen (gemiddeld ca. 25%) chronische schade over die ervoor zorgt dat hun leven niet meer is zoals het was voor de bacteriële meningitis.
