Samenvatting

Sommige neurologische aandoeningen spreken zozeer tot de verbeelding dat ze in de krant een eigen leven gaan leiden. Begin 2010 verschenen in onder andere de Daily Mail en De Telegraaf (27 april 2010) artikelen over een 35-jarige vrouw die na een langdurige migraine-aura een tijdje niet kon spreken en uiteindelijk Engels sprak met een accent dat leek op Chinees. De kop luidde ‘Britse spreekt na migraine Chinees’, maar niets blijkt minder waar. Ze spreekt geen woord Chinees, merkt zelf wel dat zij anders spreekt dan voorheen en blijkt ten einde raad. Zij lijdt aan het Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS, buitenlandse-accentsyndroom). Een patiënt met het FAS wekt de indruk met een buitenlands accent te praten en merkt dat zelf ook. In dit artikel beschrijven wij de neurologische achtergronden van het FAS aan de hand van een patiënt die wij onlangs in ons ziekenhuis zagen.
