De mens als automobiel. De ‘health check’ als APK (algemene preventieve keuring)

Samenvatting

Met “health check” wordt doorgaans een periodieke preventieve keuring van de algemene gezondheid van gezonde volwassenen bedoeld. Specifieke doelgroepen, zoals kinderen, werknemers of sportbeoefenaars, vallen hierbij buiten beschouwing. Een aantal diagnostische interventies wordt hen aangeboden met het doel de gezondheid te verbeteren door verborgen aandoeningen op te sporen en te verhelpen. Als iedere medische interventie is een algemene preventieve keuring (APK) toetsbaar door de bedoeling te meten: een daling van klinische morbiditeit of mortaliteit. Evidence based medicine (EBM) stelt zich daarbij drie vragen: kan de interventie werken, werkt ze in realiteit, en wegen de voordelen op tegen de nadelen?
