Samenvatting
Om taalbarrières in huisartsengesprekken te verminderen, kunnen huisartsen en patiënten ervoor kiezen een tolk in te schakelen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op het nut en de noodzaak van het inzetten van de professionele tolk in de gezondheidszorg. Daarnaast worden de kosten, bereikbaarheid, inzetbaarheid en werkwijze van de tolk belicht. Tevens bevat het hoofdstuk praktische aanbevelingen waarmee de effectiviteit van het voeren van een gesprek met behulp van een professionele tolk verhoogd kan worden.

Met professionele tolken worden in dit artikel tolken bedoeld die geregistreerd staan in het Register beëdigde tolken en vertalers (Rbtv). Met niet-professionele tolken worden alle overige personen bedoeld die de rol van tolk/vertaler binnen een praktijksetting op zich nemen.
