Samenvatting
Bij de behandeling van diabetes is zelfmanagement door de patiënt essentieel. Psychologische determinanten bieden dan ook betere verklaringen en oplossingen voor het veelvoorkomende probleem van therapieontrouw dan bijvoorbeeld demografische kenmerken of een tekort aan kennis. In dit artikel gaan wij in op behandel- en ziektepercepties, ervaren controle (self-efficacy) en coping als determinanten van therapietrouw. De empowermentbenadering biedt in de behandeling van diabetes betere handvatten om de therapietrouw te bevorderen dan de traditionele compliance-benadering. Empowerment is erop gericht patiënten de capaciteiten te laten ontwikkelen om zelf verantwoordelijk te zijn voor hun diabetes. De huisarts speelt hierbij een belangrijke coachende en ondersteunende rol.
