Veel patiënten denken dat cosmetische producten acne kunnen veroorzaken of verergeren en stellen hierover vragen aan hun arts. In onderstaand artikel kijken we kritisch naar dit concept van acnegeniciteit.

Er zijn twee mogelijke vormen van acnegeniciteit. Bij de eerste zouden comedogene effecten van cosmetica leiden tot acne cosmetica, bij de tweede zou irritatie door cosmetica de oorzaak zijn van folliculitis.

De eerste vorm, acne cosmetica, blijkt klinisch onvoldoende onderbouwd. Een causale relatie tussen acne en cosmetische producten is niet goed gedocumenteerd. De validiteit van dierexperimenteel onderzoek en humane provocatietesten is niet aangetoond.

De tweede vorm – cosmetische producten veroorzaken door irritatie folliculitis waardoor acne verergert – blijkt klinisch noch experimenteel voldoende onderbouwd.

Acnegeniciteit van cosmetische producten speelt waarschijnlijk een zeer beperkte rol bij vrouwen met acne. Het is daarom niet zinvol hen standaard te vragen naar cosmeticagebruik en hierover advies te geven.
