Geneesmiddelen kunnen schadelijke invloeden hebben op het ongeboren kind. Dit pleit voor een terughoudend voorschrijfbeleid tijdens de zwangerschap. Daar staat tegenover dat het staken van medicatie ook schadelijk kan zijn voor de aanstaande moeder en haar kind, vooral als het gaat om chronische aandoeningen.
