Eigenlijk is dit een boekje voor het algemene publiek en voor docenten algemene natuurwetenschappen. Althans, dat schrijft Bert Theunissen, hoogleraar wetenschapsgeschiedenis in Utrecht, in zijn voorwoord. Er komt maar één dokter (Donders) en twee bacteriologen (Pasteur en Fleming) in voor, maar dat doet er niet toe. Theunissen slaagt erin om aan de hand tien onderzoekers uit te leggen hoe wetenschap werkt.
