Plotselinge perceptieve doofheid of slechthorendheid, die veelal eenzijdig voorkomt, is een aandoening die zeer ingrijpend en invaliderend is voor een patiënt. In ongeveer 90% van de gevallen wordt er geen oorzaak gevonden en spreken we van idiopathisch plotseling perceptief gehoorverlies (IPPG). Naast anamnese en otologisch onderzoek ondersteunen de stemvorkproeven volgens Weber en Rinne de aanwezigheid van een perceptieverlies.

De enige behandeling die momenteel voorhanden is, bestaat uit een hoge dosis corticosteroïden gedurende één week. Onderzoek toont aan dat het van essentieel belang is met deze medicamenteuze behandeling snel te beginnen. Om deze reden en om andere oorzaken uit te sluiten moeten huisartsen patiënten met een plotseling ontstaan perceptief gehoorverlies met spoed verwijzen voor aanvullende diagnostiek en behandeling.
