Onderzoek naar de verhalen van patiënten – het patiëntenperspectief – vormt een aanvulling op gangbaar medisch onderzoek omdat de patiënt daar geen stem in heeft. Er zitten verschillende haken en ogen aan het begrip patiëntenperspectief. Het eerste probleem is dat iemand om een perspectief te hebben, zichzelf als individu moet zien en een visie op de wereld moet hebben die in taal is uitgedrukt. Patiënten die niet (duidelijk) praten, hebben dan geen perspectief en krijgen geen stem in het onderzoek. Een ander probleem is dat het analyseren van ‘praten’ als representatie van de wereld, eraan voorbij gaat dat praten ook iets doet in de wereld. Door deze performativiteit als uitgangspunt te nemen, kunnen de stille patiënten toch als subject in sociaal wetenschappelijk onderzoek worden betrokken. Uit handelingen kunnen waarderingen worden afgeleid, die totstandkomen in interactie met anderen in een materiële omgeving. Deze ‘coproducties’ leiden tot verschillende posities van patiënt-zijn die een vergelijking tussen verschillende situaties mogelijk maken.
