Samenvatting

Ongewild gewichtsverlies is het schrikbeeld van iedere patiënt en medicus. Terecht stellen Van Gool et al. in H&W 2003(1) dat de diagnostiek met grote voortvarendheid ter hand moet worden genomen. Parallel daaraan verdient de in de loop der tijd ontstane suboptimale voedingsstatus – getuige het substantieel gewichtsverlies – meer de aandacht. Niet alleen omdat zo’n suboptimale voedingsstatus correleert met een hogere mortaliteit en verminderd welzijn, maar het verlaagt ook de weerstand en verlengt zowel de wondgenezing als de verpleegduur.1 Daar komt nog bij dat uit de literatuur bekend is dat bij een ziekenhuisopname de reeds bestaande voedingsdeficiëntie in 75% van de gevallen toeneemt.
