Samenvatting

In het eerste hoofdstuk wordt een overzicht gegeven van de geschiedenis van het fibromyalgiesyndroom (FMS), dat 160 jaar geleden voor het eerst beschreven werd. Een belangrijke vraag daarbij is of er wel sprake is van een apart syndroom. Er is een grote overlap in symptomatologie van FMS met andere, tot op heden in pathofysiologisch opzicht onopgehelderde syndromen als chronisch vermoeidheidssyndroom (CVS) en het irritable bowel syndroom.
