Samenvatting
Een breed overspanningsbegrip heeft nadelen. In een hier geïntroduceerd beperkter concept staat het tijdelijk onvermogen van overspannen personen centraal om – als gevolg van chronische, oncontroleerbare stress – nieuwe, gecompliceerde of emotioneel beladen informatie te verwerken. Kernsymptomen zijn: concentratieproblemen, vergeetachtigheid, een daling van probleemoplossende vermogens en een toenemend oncontroleerbaar, chaotisch gevoelsleven. Overspanning wordt gezien als een overgangsfase tussen mislukkende stresscoping en psychiatrische stoornissen.
Deze invalshoek impliceert een duidelijk onderscheid met een depressie en maakt verder een nuancering van burnout wenselijk. Hierbij wordt de eigenheid van burnout niet zozeer gezien in de statische eindtoestand, maar in het ‘psychische erosieproces’ zelf. Op grond van klachten en stress-etiologie is er geen reden voor een principieel onderscheid tussen overspanning en het chronisch vermoeidheid syndroom.
