Borstvoeding in een multi-etnische populatie: de rol van de (aanstaande) vader en grootmoeder

Samenvatting

Doel: Vaststellen van de samenhang tussen de houding van de vader en grootmoeder ten opzichte van borstvoeding en het borstvoedingsgedrag (intentie, start en duur) van de aanstaande moeder in een multi-etnische populatie. Methode: Vragenlijstgegevens van 5.131 deelneemsters van de Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) cohortstudie (inclusie januari 2003-maart 2004) zijn gebruikt. Tijdens de zwangerschap werd de houding van de toekomstige vader en grootmoeder en de intentie van de moeder om borstvoeding te gaan geven nagevraagd. Drie maanden na de zwangerschap werd de start en de duur van borstvoeding nagevraagd. De samenhang tussen de houding van de vader en grootmoeder en de intentie, start en duur van de borstvoeding werd met logistische regressie nagegaan. Resultaten: In totaal stond 73,5% van de vaders en 59,1% van de grootmoeders positief tegenover borstvoeding. Deze percentages varieerden naar etnische groep. De houding van de vader en grootmoeder hing positief samen met de intentie om borstvoeding te gaan geven, de daadwerkelijke start, en de duur van borstvoeding tot tenminste drie maanden. Na correctie voor etniciteit, overige sociaaldemografische kenmerken en postnatale factoren bleven de verbanden significant (gecorrigeerde odds ratio’s tussen 1,50 en 8,44). Conclusie: De houding van de vader en grootmoeder is, onafhankelijk van etniciteit, een belangrijke determinant van borstvoedingsgedrag. Interventieprogramma’s gericht op het stimuleren van borstvoeding zouden hier meer rekening mee moeten houden.
