Introduction: Long-term sickness absence and disability are major problems with consequences for the individual, family, labour organization and society. Return to work becomes less likely with a longer absence. A preventive approach with early intervention could limit the absence duration. In earlier studies long-term fatigue showed a significant correlation with increased absence, but the multifactorial aetiology of sickness absence also has to be recognized.
