Chlooramfenicolzalf wordt in Australië regelmatig off-label gebruikt als profylaxe voor wondinfectie. Uit een enquête onder plastisch chirurgen in Groot- Brittannië is gebleken dat 66% van de plastisch chirurgen chlooramfenicol oogzalf voorschrijft als profylaxe bij ingrepen aan het nagelbed. Er is echter maar één onderzoek bekend waarin chlooramfenicol oogzalf in wonden gebruikt werd en dat was bij heupvervanging. In dat onderzoek werd geen statistisch significant resultaat gevonden.
