Samenvatting
Zo’n 50 jaar geleden werden exacerbaties van COPD steevast in verband gebracht met bacteriële infecties. Nochtans konden in rijkelijk geproduceerd sputum tijdens exacerbaties niet meer bacteriën worden aangetoond dan tijdens stabiele perioden. De bacteriële hypothese werd daarom naar de prullenmand verwezen. Nu lijkt men echter toch weer in het infectieuze kamp te zijn beland. Sputum is maar het topje van de ijsberg. Broncho-alveolaire lavage laat immers toe om monsters te nemen tot in de bronchiolen.
