De Amerikaanse gezinstherapeut van Italiaanse afkomst, James L. Framo wilde aanvankelijk – zo schrijft hij in het voorwoord – het ultieme boek schrijven over gezinstherapie. Een werktitel was reeds voorhanden: ‘An intergenerational approach to marital and family therapy’. Later werd deze titel gewijzigd in het ambitieuzere: ‘An intergenerational approach to marital and family therapy: marriage, divorce and family of origin’.
