Over de relativiteit van waargenomen beweging en haar gevolgen

Abstract

Begrippen als ‘beweging’, ‘stilstand’, ‘snelheid’ en ‘bewegingsrichting’ zijn relatief. Aan een schip op open zee kun je niet zien of het vaart of stil ligt. Dat kan alleen als we bijvoorbeeld de kust zien, of indirect, door te kijken hoe het schip ten opzichte van de golven beweegt, mits we weten hoe die zich ten opzichte van de oceaanbodem bewegen. Kortom, beweging is geen objecteigenschap maar een relatie tussen objecten. Natuurkundigen praten pas over ‘beweging’ als duidelijk is ten opzichte waarvan die beweging is gedefinieerd.
