Abstract
In 1808 begon in Nederland de georganiseerde zorg voor blinden met het oprichten van een instituut in Amsterdam. Pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontstond de zorg voor slechtzienden met eigen aanpassingen als vergrote maar wel gewone leesletters, vergrotende hulpmiddelen, kijkertjes en allerlei vormen van visuele training. In de loop van de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw werd duidelijk dat er naast de normale blinde of slechtziende ontwikkeling ook een groep kinderen is die niet alleen in termen van beperkte gezichtsscherpte en gezichtsveld valt te begrijpen. Dit is de groep kinderen met visueel functieverlies ten gevolge van hersenbeschadigingen. De Schotse oogarts Dutton herkende in zijn werk met kinderen vergelijkbare visuele agnosieën als hij al bij volwassenen had gezien. Hij begon onderzoek te doen naar deze in aanleg gegeven cerebrale visuele beperkingen (Cerebral Visual Impairment ’ cvi; Vlaams: cerebrale visuele inperkingen) en erover te schrijven samen met onder andere de Zweedse Jacobson. In Canada publiceerden in dezelfde periode Jan en Groenveld over deze groep.
