Abstract
Bij de ziekte van Alzheimer zijn verschillende cognitieve functies aangedaan, waaronder geheugen, aandacht en taalfuncties. Alhoewel in veel minder ernstige vorm, is ook bij gezonde veroudering een achteruitgang in deze functies te zien. Cognitieve functies berusten op geïntegreerde activiteit van neurale systemen binnen de hersenen. Om informatie uit te kunnen wisselen moeten hersengebieden met elkaar verbonden zijn en hierbij speelt de witte stof een belangrijke rol.
