Abstract
Wij onderzochten bij gezonde proefpersonen het effect van acute stress op hun geheugen voor neutraal en emotioneel materiaal. Proefpersonen werden eerst blootgesteld aan een stressor, de Trier Social Stress Test (n=20), of aan een neutrale taak (n=20). Vervolgens kregen alle proefpersonen een verbale geheugentaak die zowel emotioneel als neutraal materiaal omvatte. Het stresshormoon cortisol werd driemaal gemeten door middel van speekselwinning. Onze resultaten lieten een robuust effect van stress op geheugenprestatie zien: het geheugen voor emotioneel materiaal werd significant beter, maar dat voor neutraal materiaal werd slechter onder invloed van stress. Tegen de verwachting in vonden wij geen verband tussen cortisolspiegels en geheugenprestatie. Wij concluderen dat stress niet per definitie een geheugenondermijnend effect heeft. Als zo'n effect wel optreedt (neutraal materiaal) is het de vraag of cortisol daarbij een rol speelt.

Merk op dat deze bevinding korte metten maakt met de interpretatie in termen van toestandsafhankelijk leren. Wie onder stress wordt gezet onthoudt niet alleen de negatieve woorden beter (zoals deze interpretatie voorspelt), maar ook de positieve woorden (wat deze interpretatie uitsluit).
