Narcolepsie: recente ontwikkelingen

Abstract

Narcolepsie is een slaapstoornis die naar schatting bij 1 op de 2000 mensen voorkomt (Mignon 1998): dit betekent dat er in Nederland ongeveer 7500 en in de vs ongeveer 150 000 narcolepsiepatiënten zijn. Narcolepsie wordt vooral gekenmerkt door aanhoudende en overmatige slaperigheid overdag (eds = excessive daytime sleepiness). Daarnaast zijn er andere symptomen, zoals cataplexie, hypnagoge hallucinaties, slaapparalyse, automatisch gedrag en verstoorde slaap tijdens de nacht, vaak, maar niet altijd samengaan met eds.
