The Effectiveness of the Testimony Method for children of World War II survivors and child survivors, a pilot study
The Testimony Method consists of a detailed collection of biographical data, in particular those connected to traumatic life experiences. These data are systematically written down in a so-called testimony-document, which is signed for agreement as if the document has legal status. As yet, the method has only been investigated with patients who themselves have been the victim of acts of war or torture. In the current pilot study an attempt was made to establish the effectiveness of the testimony method as a form of treatment for children of World War II survivors and child survivors. No strong results in favour of the testimony method were found. Among the possible reasons for these disappointing results are a too rational approach of patients’ negative life experiences. Modification of the Testimony Method by adding experiential and creative elements might increase effectiveness. Future studies should also focus on procedures (a) to identify patients for whom this treatment method might be promising and (b) to customize the Testimony Method for the individual patient.
Notes
