Summary
Impact factors are commonly used to assess the quality of scientific output.
Method. In the current study, scientific publications in English of the ten neonatal intensive care units in the Netherlands are analyzed which have been published between 2004 and 2006 and are cited by PubMed. A citation score was calculated by dividing the impact factor of the publication by the aggregate impact factor of the subject category of the specific journal.
Results. From 2004-2006 261 manuscripts were published of which an impact factor could be obtained. The citation score of these publications was 1.29, 1.23 and 1.24 in 2004, 2005, and 2006, respectively. Of the papers 28.7% was published in the top 10% journals of the particular subject category, and 28.0% in the best 11-25% journals.
Conclusion. Neonatologists of the ten Dutch perinatal centers score better than the average of the subject category. Neonatal units may use these data for comparison with their own scientific achievements. In addition, the method can be used by other pediatric subspecialties.
