Gelijktijdig met de introductie van zirkoniumdioxide-implantaten is er een discussie geëntameerd over de soms ongunstige reactie op titaniumimplantaten. Voor het onderzoek daarnaar ligt het voor de hand om het oppervlak van deze implantaten nader te bestuderen.
