Werkzaamheden van verpleeghuisartsen buiten het verpleeghuis

A research into the scope and nature of patient care duties of nursing home physicians outside the nursing home

Design

Inventorial descriptive study

Methods

A written survey with a questionnaire distributed among all working nursing home physicians

Results

54% (n=600) of the physicians have responded. The average working hours of nursing home physicians amount to 30.3 hours per week, consisting of 21.4 hours dedicated to patient care duties. 5.6 hours or 26 % of these patient care duties are dedicated to extramural patients, mainly to rest home residents or to patients living on their own.

Conclusions

The outcome of this research proves that medical care for the vulnerable elderly and for chronically ill patients is very labourextensive. One physician is responsible either for as many as 400 vulnerable elderly or chronically ill patients living on their own or for 200 residents of homes for the aged. The need for medical help of these categories of patients needs further investigation.

Onderzoek naar de omvang en aard van de patiëntgebonden werkzaamheden van verpleeghuisartsen buiten het verpleeghuis.

Inventariserend beschrijvend onderzoek

Methode

Schriftelijke enquête met vragenlijsten onder alle actief werkzame verpleeghuisartsen (n=1110)

Resultaten

De respons bedroeg 54% (n=600).Verpleeghuisartsen werken gemiddeld 30,3 uur per week, waarvan 21,4 uur patiëntgebonden werkzaamheden.Van deze patiëntgebonden werkzaamheden wordt 5,6 uur of 26% besteed aan patiënten, die niet in het verpleeghuis zijn opgenomen, vooral verzorgingshuisbewoners en zelfstandig wonenden.

Conclusie

De resultaten van dit onderzoek maken duidelijk dat de medische zorg voor kwetsbare ouderen en chronisch zieken arbeidsintensief is. Een arts kan hoofdbehandelaar zijn van bijna 400 zelfstandig wonende kwetsbare ouderen / chronisch zieken of van 200 verzorgingshuisbewoners. Het verdient aanbeveling om de medische hulpvraag van deze categorie nader in kaart te brengen.
