Samenvatting
Afwijkend mondgedrag ligt vaak aan de basis van gnathologische klachten. Het gaat daarbij meestal om parafuncties als knarsen,klemmen en nagelbijten. Bij patiënten met TMJ-klachten wordt in eerste instantie geprobeerd deze parafuncties met behulp van bepaalde oefeningen onder controle te krijgen. Daarbij wordt de patiënt tevens geïnstrueerd het gapen of geeuwen te onderdrukken omdat dit leidt tot een extreme mondopening die zeer belastend kan zijn voor het kaakgewricht.
