Samenvatting
Frontotemporale dementie is een preseniele vorm van dementie, die wordt gekenmerkt door progressieve gedragsveranderingen en taalstoornissen. We bespreken de klinische criteria voor het stellen van de diagnose, die bevestigd kan worden door hersenonderzoek. Therapeutische mogelijkheden ontbreken, behoudens symptomatische medicamenteuze behandeling van de gedragsveranderingen.

Gezien het relatief hoge aantal toevalsdiagnosen na obductie liggen de werkelijke prevalentiecijfers waarschijnlijk hoger. In een aantal grote post-mortem studies varieert het voorkomen van FTD tussen de 3 en 13% van het totale aantal dementieën; in studies naar preseniele dementieën loopt dit percentage op tot wel 20%.
