Samenvatting
Volgens de gangbare psychiatrische diagnostiek (DSM-IV) mag de diagnose dementie pas gesteld worden bij waarneembaar verlies van autonomie en hulpbehoevendheid, met andere woorden als de cognitieve stoornissen zo ernstig zijn dat het alledaagse functioneren wordt beïnvloed. Vrijwel altijd is er dan al enkele jaren sprake van cognitieve achteruitgang.
