Pathologisch gokken

Abstract

Voor de stoornis van het te vaak en om te veel geld spelen, bestaan allerlei begrippen: gokverslaving, dwangmatig gokken, excessief gokken, problematisch of pathologisch gokken. We verkiezen hier de woorden excessief of pathologisch gokken. Het gaat om een hardnekkig probleem dat een ernstige inbreuk doet op het leven van de betrokkene en diens directe omgeving. Zo ontstaan er dikwijls financiële problemen door de grote hoeveelheden geld die aan het gokken worden gespendeerd. Ook vergroot deze stoornis de kans op andere emotionele, psychiatrische en fysieke gezondheidsproblemen bij de betrokkene en diens gezin. Suïcide kan het gevolg zijn. Slechts overtroffen door stemmingsstoornissen, schizofrenie en enkele neurologische aandoeningen, ligt het suïcidecijfer ten gevolge van pathologisch gokken erg hoog.
