Samenvatting
Kwaadaardige ziekten kenmerken zich door ongeremde celgroei, infiltratieve groei en metastasering. Behandelingen als chirurgie en radiotherapie zijn in principe lokale behandelingen en kunnen een tumor met zijn infiltratiegroei in omgevende weefsels verwijderen. Deze behandelingen zijn echter niet in staat om uitzaaiingen buiten het operatie- of bestralingsgebied te bestrijden.

Het beenmerg is het meest gevoelig voor chemotherapie. Vroeger kon chemotherapie nooit in hele hoge doseringen gegeven worden, omdat de aanmaak van witte en rode bloedlichaampjes en bloedplaatjes geremd zou worden, en infecties zouden optreden. Perifere stamceltransplantatie is een techniek waarmee men probeert deze bijwerking van hoge-dosis-chemotherapie te verminderen. Stamcellen worden uit het bloed van een patiënt geïsoleerd en ingevroren. Na de hoge-dosis-chemotherapie worden ze weer toegediend. Na nesteling in het beenmerg bevorderen ze vervolgens de aanmaak van nieuwe bloedcellen.
