Samenvatting
Verloopt het vroegkinderlijke ontwikkelingsproces geleidelijk of sprongsgewijs? Deze vraag houdt onderzoekers bezig sinds het begin van deze eeuw, toen de systematische studie van de ontwikkeling van het kind begon. Pioniers als C. Stanley Hall begonnen met behulp van vragenlijsten, interviews, observaties bij grote groepen kinderen descriptief materiaal over de sequentie en timing van ontwikkelingsprocessen te verzamelen. Zij vroegen zich af wat de gemiddelde leeftijd was waarop zich processen voordeden in taal, denken en handelen. Er werden ‘milestones’ geformuleerd met betrekking tot kernverrichtingen binnen de belangrijkste mentale en motorische functiedomeinen, die in of rondom een bepaalde fase in het ontwikkelingsproces zichtbaar zouden worden. Als belangrijke determinanten werden, in een zekere wisselwerking met elkaar, ‘rijping’ en ‘omgeving’ opgevoerd.
