‘Inspireren tot leren’ is de titel van een boek van Dries van der Vlerk, docent aan Hogeschool De Horst te Amersfoort. Is het ook een adequate beschrijving van wat maatschappelijk werkers doen? Deze vraag beantwoor­den velen bevestigend, zoals Nora van Riet en Harry Wou­ters in hun boek ‘Helpen = Leren’ (1993) en Lies Schilder die de maatschappelijk wer­ker ziet als een evenwichts­kunstenaar die er niet primair op uit is om problemen voor cliënten op te lossen, maar hen wil laten leren (2005, lezing NVMW-congres).
