Er wordt een casus beschreven van een patiënt met chronisch hartfalen (CHF) die na een opname met decompensatio cordis door de cardioloog is verwezen naar de hartrevalidatie. Uit de literatuur blijkt dat geïsoleerde duurtraining en duurtraining gecombineerd met spierkrachttraining positieve effecten hebben op de spierkracht, functionele inspanningstolerantie en kwaliteit van leven bij deze patiëntencategorie. Aangezien de patiënt uit deze casus vanwege andere lichamelijke beperkingen onvoldoende duurtraining kan uitvoeren en spierkrachttraining op basis van wat er in de literatuur bekend is een goed alternatief lijkt te zijn, wordt de volgende klinische vraag gesteld: ‘Wat is het effect van geïsoleerde spierkrachttraining op de functionele inspanningstolerantie en de kwaliteit van leven bij patiënten met chronisch hartfalen (CHF)?’ Om tot een antwoord op deze vraag te komen, is een literatuurstudie uitgevoerd. Uit deze literatuurstudie blijkt dat er voldoende bewijs is voor het effect van geïsoleerde spierkrachttraining op de functionele inspanningstolerantie bij patiënten met CHF. Er is echter onvoldoende bewijs voor het effect van geïsoleerde spierkrachttraining op de kwaliteit van leven. Concluderend kan gesteld worden dat patiënten met CHF, die vanwege lichamelijke beperkingen geen of onvoldoende duurtraining kunnen uitvoeren goed trainbaar lijken door middel van geïsoleerde spierkrachttraining.
