In dit artikel worden aan de hand van het Biopsychosociaal Whiplashmodel de meest recente inzichten met betrekking tot het ontstaan van een chronisch Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) beschreven. Onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat behalve fysieke factoren, ook verschillende psychosociale factoren verantwoordelijk zijn voor het ontstaan van langdurige klachten na een whiplashtrauma. De relatie tussen verschillende soorten stressoren, stressreacties en cognitieve processen passeren de revue. Tot slot wordt een aantal adviezen gegeven voor praktiserende fysiotherapeuten.
