Abstract
Onrechtvaardigheid is derhalve ‘in the eye of the beholder’.

Lemstra, P., & Yperen, N.W. Van (2006). A procedural fairer refereeing system as a remedy against insulting chants in soccer stadiums. Nederlands Tijdschrift voor de Psychologie, 61, 1-13.
In this experiment, we examined the relationship between justice and verbal aggression towards soccer referees (Luinge is a Dutch soccer referee). The participants (n = 148 men; all were sc Heerenveen fans to a certain extent) watched a digital video fragment of a sc Heerenveen match. In this fragment, the referee made a for sc Heerenveen disadvantageous decision, either correct (distributive justice) or incorrect (distributive injustice). The effect of distributive (in)justice on verbal aggression was examined under three conditions of procedural justice: 1 the refereeing system as usual, 2 the refereeing system as usual with an additional replay, and 3 a novel, procedurally fairer refereeing system in which the referee made use of video recordings before he made a final decision. As expected, a disadvantageous correct decision in the ‘refereeing as usual’ condition elicited more verbal aggression, but only among individuals who strongly identified themselves with sc Heerenveen. This result suggests that verbal aggression in soccer stadiums can be reduced by implementing a procedurally fairer refereeing system.
