To investigate why some parent-adolescent conflicts are related to adolescent adjustment and others are not, the moderating role of conflict resolution in this relation was examined. Participants were 1.313 Dutch adolescents, who completed measures on conflicts and conflict resolution with father and mother and adjustment problems. Five types of adolescents could be distinguished that were characterized by different patterns of conflict resolution. These types meaningfully differed in conflicts with parents and adjustment problems. Furthermore, conflicts were stronger related to externalizing problems for a type characterized by withdrawal and low positive problem solving, and were stronger related to internalizing problems for a type that mainly used negative ways to resolve conflicts.
