Abstract
Er is toenemende evidentie dat walging essentieel betrokken is bij verschillende angststoornissen. Recent onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat minstens drie typen walging kunnen worden onderscheiden: kernwalging, ‘animal-reminder’-walging en sociomorele walging. Elk hiervan wordt verondersteld een specifieke defensieve functie te vervullen. In dit artikel wordt besproken hoe de verschillende walgingtypen mogelijk bijdragen aan ontstaan en voortbestaan van bepaalde vormen van psychopathologie. Zo wordt aannemelijk gemaakt dat kernwalging met name geassocieerd is met spinfobie, en animal-reminder-walging met bloedfobie. Het verschil in fysiologisch reactiepatroon bij spin- en bloedfobie kan mogelijk worden teruggevoerd op een domeinspecifiek, parasympathisch responspatroon van orale en animal-reminder-walging. Deze veronderstelde domeinspecificiteit en de daarmee gepaard gaande differentiële fysiologische patronen, bieden interessante aanknopingspunten voor toekomstig onderzoek. Dit kan bijdragen aan een beter inzicht in zowel de processen betrokken bij de verscheidene angststoornissen als in hun fenomenologie.
