Metaphors as an inexhaustible source for psychodrama
In psychodrama metaphors may contribute significantly to the therapeutic process. In this article a case study is described of a woman, 28 years old, suffering from depression and anxiety. She is treated with psychodrama. The woman uses ‘sitting in a pit’ (in the depths) as a metaphor for her problems. During a psychodrama session she is asked to construct a symbolic pit, in which she literally acts out her situation. Group members take an active part in acting out the metaphor by doubling her feelings and by giving a voice to the pit. The advantages of the use of metaphors in psychodrama in terms of commitment, imagination, confrontation and insight are pointed out. Metaphors are an inexhaustible source for psychodrama.
