Theory-driven, multidimensional, multi-trait assessment: theory, empirical results and relevance to the practice of psychotherapy
This article makes a plea for the relevance of multidimensional-multi-trait assessment in psychotherapy. We argue that the present financial and political views on mental health care do definitely not reflect the state of the art in clinical psychology. Although the role of classification systems like DSM IV is under dispute, particularly in the field of the assessment of personality pathology, authorities consider classification as the main guideline to treatment. They make a plea for the description of DSM IV diagnosis-treatment combinations, including their costs, in order to provide for a more efficient financial management. By contrast, we argue strongly in favour of a reconsideration of this view and plead for a combination of descriptive and multidimensional assessment.
