Drie generaties holocaust?

Over gehechtheid, trauma en veerkracht

Abstract

Ruim een halve eeuw geleden werden naar schatting zes miljoen joden vermoord in een gruwelijke genocide. Ongeveer driekwart van de joodse Nederlanders werd omgebracht. Er waren ook overlevenden, onder wie kinderen die soms op even wonderbaarlijke als tragische wijze de verschrikkingen van de holocaust wisten te doorstaan. Wat is er van hen geworden, meer dan vijftig jaar na hun traumatische ervaringen, nu ze rond de 70 jaar oud zijn? Ondergaan zij en hun kinderen en misschien zelfs hun kleinkinderen nog de (indirecte) invloed van de holocaust?

In dit artikel wordt een gehechtheidstheoretisch onderzoek naar mogelijke overdracht van traumatische holocaustervaringen over drie generaties belicht, en worden de uitkomsten van een meta-analytische studie besproken. De conclusie luidt dat de eerste generatie overlevenden nog steeds symptomen van posttraumatische stress laat zien, maar dat er geen intergenerationele overdracht heeft plaatsgevonden. Een stressdiathesis model kan een verklaring bieden voor de opmerkelijke veerkracht van de holocaustoverlevenden.
