Abstract

Summary
This article describes the valuable aspects of the concept of projective identification. It also raises a number of critical notes regarding the way the concept is sometimes used. Before concluding that projectieve identification is present, it is helpful to keep a number of distinctions in mind: that between defence and deficit, between projective identification and primary identification, between intention to communicate and communicative potential of behaviour, between projective identification as defence and projective identification as communication, between projective identification of the patient and projective identification of the therapist.
