Summary
Acute life-threatening diseases that coincide with a systemic inflammatory response such as septic shock may lead to serious organ dysfunction. Often this occurs very early in the course of the disease, the ‘golden hours’. There is sufficient support from the literature that early recognition of a imminent circulatory insufficiency and aggressive early goal directed therapy are essential for a good outcome of these patients.
