Summary
Cyanosis in a newborn is almost always due to heart or lung disease. If that is not the case one should always think of methemoglobinemia as a cause of neonatal cyanosis. We are presenting a newborn with methemoglobinemia due to maternal local anesthesia with prilocaine just before delivery. We will discuss pathogenesis, aetiology, symptoms and therapy of methemoglobinemia. A few cases of neonatal methemoglobinemia due to prilocaine are described in the literature. Diagnosis and treatment are relatively easy.
