Summary

In the process of the development of allergy several prenatal and postnatal causating factors can be recognised. These factors are hereditary and pre- and postnatal environmental factors. Prenatal enviromental factors are maternal smoking and diet. Postnatal environmental factors are infections, the presence or absence of certain microorganisms in the gut flora, the number of siblings, allergy for inhaled allergens, air pollution and (passive) smoking. The exact impact of these factors on the development of allergy has yet to be determined by the outcome of several ongoing studies. Strategies for the prevention of allergic diseases will be directed towards all the contributing factors.
