Summary
Duodenal atresia is one of the causes for neonatal intestinal obstruction. In a retrospective survey the charts of 32 children who underwent surgery for duodenal atresia were studied for relations between prenatal evaluations, duration of pregnancy, birth weight, the use of transanastomotic tubes, concurrent anomalies, postoperative complications, and start of enteral feeding, duration of hospital stay and mortality. Mortality in this survey was 6%. Morbidity was 37,5%. Concurrent anomalies, postoperative complications have no influence on the start of enteral feeding and hospital stay. Prematurely born babies and neonates with a birth weight less than 2500 grams remained significantly longer in the hospital. Neonates with longer lasting gastric retentions had significantly higher birth weights. The use of transanastomotic tubes beared no advantage.
